It was explained to us that Milford Sound should really be called Milford Fiord. A sound was created by an ancient river that cut through the land to the ocean and created a V-shaped valley. A fiord was created by moving ice--glacier--during the ice age that cut a U-shaped valley to the sea. Therefore, in reality Milford is a fiord but I guess someone long ago misnamed it or they just liked the way sound rolled off of the tongue. It is a water-outlet to the Tasman Sea which is between New Zealand and Australia. There is a small island off of the coast of Australia called Tasmania and that is where the tasmanian devil comes from!
When we finally got to the sound we had been on and off the bus for about 5 hours. It has been a very pleasant and exciting ride but it was nice to get up and walk about and be in the fresh air. We boarded a small cruise ship, probably could hold 150 people in all, and set out.
This last photo is coming back into the dock. In the distance you can see kayaks. I guess that is another way to see it.
